Our home should be an extension of our personality, according to homewares designer, Jennifer Dumet.
Her successful self-titled brand is certainly a magnificent extension of Jennifer’s personal love for design and innovation with decorative wire lamps and hand-crafted ceramics in her preferred neutral tones.
Her latest collection explores new techniques and applications, especially within ceramics and wire and the results are simply stunning.
Jennifer spoke with Decoration+Design blog on the new range, her source of inspiration, and how make-believe houses as a child inspired her passion for design.
When did you first realise design was your passion?
Since I started playing house as a child. My make-believe houses were intricately designed!
How did you get your start? Did you study or are you self-taught?
Everything I have done has been on a self-taught, hands-on basis. From my observations some of the most creative people have not had a formal training
What are some of the biggest sources of inspiration for your design?
Holidays are always a huge source of inspiration. I love tropical environments and try to go to at least one exotic place per year if not 2.
You are about to exhibit the new collection at D+D soon, what can you tell us about this range? What’s new to the brand that you haven’t ventured into before?
For a number of years I’ve been developing relationships with several factories in China that I design for. Together we have been exploring new techniques.
This season I have developed some very exciting new ranges with our ceramic factory and wire factory in particular.
We will be introducing some unique applications not seen before in our market.
Is colour a major influence for you? What is the palette you personally love to work with? why?
I have a huge aversion to colour. Everything I design comes from a neutral palette.
Being surrounded by so many beautiful and stylish homewares, are you constantly changing your own home with each collection?
My home is always changing because I spend so much time in China working with the factories to develop new techniques and applications, I am constantly stimulated by the potentials of what I see.
It is therefore impossible to return home to an environment that doesn’t also inspire me in the same way.
Do you think it’s important to continue changing and redecorating your home environment to suit your mood, or times of the year? Why?
My home is an extension of my personality. I am very much sensitive to the energy of my immediate environment.
When you add up the amount of time we all spend at home, I think it is so important that we react positively to it.
We don’t wear the same wardrobe for years on end, and I think our interiors should evolve with us in the same way.
Personally I think its important to feel like you’re on holiday in your own home!
What do you hope to achieve at the D+D fair?
We market ourselves predominantly to boutique retailers, however D&D is an excellent opportunity for us to also meet Interior Decorators, Designers and Corporate Buyers who wouldn’t normally see our full range on display.
We always make a lot of new leads through D&D.
The latest Jennifer Dumet range will be on show at Decoration + Design from 21-24 July at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.
